I never would have thought that dunes right at the ocean can have such pretty flowers growing. In summer, when normally people go to the beach it is just dry grasses and some leftovers from spring growing plants. The heat and wind takes care of the rest.
But if you go in spring, there are so many flowers growing and blooming! Those I shot back in March on the first day of Spring. We went to the beach to enjoy some big waves and lack of people. It is still pretty cold usually nobody is there. Just some locals walking their dogs.
A nice way to celebrate that day, right?
Linaria polygalifolia
Those little flowers just love the coastal environment. They grow basically just in sand often partially covered by it.
They can be found all along the coast of Portugal as it is native to southeast Europe, North America and Asia. Blooming time is from March until the end of June.
They are not very big, at least the one I saw. The stems were about 20 cm in length and the flowers around 2 cm. What I like about them are those stripes on the bottom part.
Now that the summer is over we will have to take a trip and check on the Autumn blooming plants. The place is amazing and pure joy to walk around. Just not in the summer season when it is invaded by tourists and people on holidays.
Of course I didn't take any photo of the whole plant. I see pretty flower and I forget about everything else. So here is a shot I borrowed from the internet :)
