I have bought this little orchid 4 years ago from one of the online nurseries. I was ordering other plants as well and in the last moment I dropped this one to my basket too. Just because it was so cheap it would be silly not to take it.
And while some of the other plants I got managed to die during the first year, this one is still with me and blooming every year.
And every year she has more and more blooms.
It is a true miniature that, if you really want, you will fir in a pocket. Just as the common Dendorbium Nobile type you can buy in flower shops, this one also grows fat (for it's size) canes that lose their leaves the following season and start to bloom. That's why my one is completely naked and you can see all the older canes still there I do not remove them as they work as storage for the plant even if they don't grow anymore and don't have any roots (old roots will die off too, just as the leaves). I kind of like that look. Like if it died and then suddenly in the middle of winter it start to grow flowers.
Orchids are awesome!
It has been in bloom for a few weeks already and the flowers slowly start to fade. It was the last moment to take some photos.
But if you look at the lower photo, you will see a tiny, green bloom at the base of one of the canes. That is a new cane starting to pop. Hopefully I will get at least 2 or 3 new ones this year - those will be the blooming ones next season.
And yea, I grow this one in semi-hydroponics. She is doing fine, but I think I will switch it back to bark. It is somehow easier for me to maintain it and make sure the roots are healthy.
Here is another currently blooming orchid - Procatavola Golden Peacock. It is a medium size orchid (smaller than common Phalaenopsis and Dendrobiums) and it still looks so big next to the little Pocket Lover.
As a bonus a shot from 2 years ago with a grey Monster. See how much smaller it was?
The Grey Monster didn't want to pose today. She was enjoying her sunny spot and didn't care about orchids.
