Look what I found covered in frost. A clump of Sempervivums growing among other plants. And while most will lose their leaves, die back, those will not care for the cold weather. Polish winter can go as low as -20 C. As long as they are not wet, but just cold/covered by snow, they will be fine. That's how tough they are!
Sempervivum or more commonly Houseleek is a very easy growing and not demanding succulent.
In nature they will grow on higher elevations among rocks and grasses. Very often they will have to withstand long summer droughts and layers of snow in winter. Thus they are perfect for lazy people garden. In moderate climate you probably wont have to do anything around them. Just make sure it is growing in very well drained soil. It will do well on raiser rockeries for example.
Growing it in a garden or a pot the only thing they really hate is too much water.
With the right care they will bloom every year with cute little star shaped flowers. The blooming rosette will die after that, but they usually manage to grow many little offsets before that happens so the future generation is secure.
I have 3 types myself and the only problem with them I had are mealybugs. They seem to like them and since the plant has lots of small and very tightly growing leaves they are basically impossible to remove manually. Only spraying will work.
Overall they are just awesome plants!
