I had first read this book when I was younger, labeling ‘Mockingjay’ to be the weakest installment of the franchise. However, that opinion has now completely changed upon this re-read.
Katniss Everdeen has survived the third quarter quell against all odds. But now, she must settle on which side of the rebellion she will take as all eyes are watching her.
Starting strong with the positives, I feel as if the conclusion to the franchise really encapsulates everything the other two books had attempted to summarize. That being, how survival changes people. This time, that is shown through the effects of the war and getting to know the different victors in depth. And don’t get me started with how everything that was started with this series came to an end from the moment Katniss shoots that arrow at President Coin. At the beginning, she had volunteered for Prim. Now she is shooting at the women who killed Prim, but also the women who orchestrated a variety of horrible happenings. For Finnick. For Rue. For Cinna. For Boggs.
Before I jump into my critiques for the book, I do want to emphasize that though not a perfect book, my respect for it has certainly grown. I really only have one main critique, in fact. That being the timing. It took a while to get through the book, and I understand that was likely on purpose. It’s supposed to be depressing. But I don’t know, it could’ve been still presented in this way but with better pacing.
Overall, I cannot complain. I could rant on for days about everything this book symbolizes. 5 stars to the book, more like 3 stars for the movie though…
