Grains form the backbone of beer. They contribute to the flavor, color and mouth feel of the beer while also providing the sugars the yeast require in order to produce alcohol. Grains are cereals, and most people agree that beer was first brewed as source of stored nutrition. The alcohol content of early beers was relatively low, around 3 percent, and the beverage was consumed by children as well as adults. European monks, who still create some of the most respected beers in the world, originally brewed beer as a way to provide nourishment to the townspeople and as their own source of nutrition during religious feasts. Locked in the dilemma of staying away from filling foods and drinks yet having to meet all the nutritional requirements of athletes, a growing numbers of runners have found light beer as the answer to their eating and drinking paradox. Light beer has proved to be a boom for the runner who must be ever on guard of his calorie intake. On the average, light beer contains 95 calories compared to the 170 of hard liquors. Alcohol content in light beer is also less, hovering between 2.5 and 3.5 percent.

And because the light brews belong to the beer family, they also contain the proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, niacin, and riboflavin sought after the running buff in his diet.

Studies conducted show that a liter of light beer daily does not only contribute a valuable share of vitamins and minerals but also refreshes and relaxes the athlete. The dehydration of long distance running may cause kidney stones specially if one is training in a hot, dry climate. Water quenches thirst before a runner have drunk enough for his kidneys. Beer doesn't work that way since it goes more directly to the kidneys. Beer followed by water is more effective for rehydration than water only.
