Valentine's Day was last week and in honor of our patron saint, the @cinetv community asked us what our favorite romantic movie is.
Truth be told, I'm not a fanatic of the genre, but I think there are many exquisite love stories that have been told in cinema and some of them I especially love because I connected them to my own personal moments and experiences.
Where to start to mention Pride and Prejudice, Love Actually, In mood for love, Brokeback Mountain, The weeping meadow and many others.
But one movie I particularly love is High Fidelity. You may ask me why?
First of all, I love music a lot. It fills almost every moment of my life.
Second, because for me, John Cusack, that sensitive man who dares to show his emotions, is the perfect man for romantic films.
High Fidelity is a double love story. Rob loves music. He loves it so much that it has become a part of his life. He owns a record store, most of his conversations are about music, he makes cassettes of favorite songs as the occasion arises. He is generally a music lover.
But Rob loves Laura. He loves her quite a bit, but as in all relationships, routine comes and after routine comes trouble. And Rob makes the mistake of breaking his bond with Laura.
So after going through all the stages a divorcee goes through (another reason I love this movie, because Cusack isn't afraid to wrinkle himself), he tries to find out why he's failing in his relationships by asking his exes questions.
Through a long road of self-discovery, Rob finds the answer he wants: Love takes two and it takes constant effort to keep relationships going and make them truly happy.
Cusack in this film is talking to you. There are several scenes where he shoots directly into the camera and talks to us, the viewers. And what he says are the thoughts that have gone through the mind of every man in love : "has she found someone else?", "will she come back to me?" "What are the top 5 songs? "
This film is not about great loves. Our hero is an ordinary man, whose only super weapon is his knowledge of music. A man who is searching for the answers to be able to make his beloved happy. And a love story that goes through many waves, but reaches its happy path.
But what is most important about this film are the list of Top 5 of everything that Rob makes.
Wanna make yours top 5?
