Do not be so pretentious,
You call me a soul as though
You know what that means.
You accept everyone and as a result
Reject them all.
You feign calm and resilience,
But are simply disengaged,
And overly simplistic.
Life is more than you can fit into
A three word sentence,
And more than abstract aspirations.
It is wanting to steal back your toy
From the kid on the playground,
Being short with your best friend because
You have not eaten lunch,
It is wanting to cheat on your wife
Of twenty-five years with a pretty young woman
And the conversation you have with yourself
That says no.
It is the thorn in my side
And the log in your eye.
Do not pretend to know what a soul is
Until you know what life is.
