Darkness

Like the ominous trek through the basement,
Or the frightful step into a black room.
When the door slams behind you
And your are blanketed by mystery.

We chase away shadow with fire,
One in our hearth and one in our sky,
But we fight a losing battle,
Not even our stars will win.

Darkness is fundamental,
It requires no energy and bares no life.
Candles are blown out, bulbs will die,
Stars go cold, and friends pass on.

But darkness is and is not,
By the space between planets and people,
The light of a match, the whisper of wind,
The spark of life, and the will to fight.
