An Athiest Gives Thanks
"I am grateful for the resistant
Shingles that fight back the rain,
For my parents who reared and raised
Me without any care for repayment,"
"For the work that I do and especially
The moments of the week when I enjoy it,
For the food I eat, for the friends who
Distract me from how short life is,"
"For the transnational political economic
System that conspired to give me a home,
For the strange peace that comes
With a moment when I am truly carefree,"
"For the money in my bank, the water
In my pipes, and the light in my bulbs,
For the brain in my head with all
Of its nuances and elegant design,"
"For the expanding of the universe
Whose ways are higher than my imagination,
For the being in which I have been allowed
To reside in insignificance under the sun."
I placed this letter on my open windowsill,
Hoping the wind would take it to
The person who was owed my gratitude.
I ignored the knocking at my door.
