A Moment

She was smiling,
That brilliant glimmer of pure
Unadulterated delight smile,
That has a way of making
The knees buckle,
Stomach leapfrog,
And turn that minute moment
Of pleasantry into
A lifetime's worth of pleasure.

I return the gesture
With a shy nod
And study my shoelaces
With great care to hide
The churning of my passions.

It is the ground that
Turns me earthward.

I recognize the illogic
Of the match.
Our star crossed path
Would crash on earth
When a ring
Chains her wings.

But for the moment
I can savor her welcoming
Skies like the foolish
Dove ignores the coming storm
In the joviality of the morning.
For now I have her smile
Perhaps that will
Guard me from the torrents.
