I knew that the "Fiesta de los Indianos" was one of the most popular and colorful celebrations of the Canary Islands, and that it was celebrated in several places of the islands, especially in La Palma and Tenerife. That's why it caught my attention to discover that in Sant Pere de Ribes, a Catalan town near Sitges where I am currently staying, this tradition is also celebrated.

On the day of the celebration I did not want to miss the experience of approaching the history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
As in many other places in Spain, in the town of Ribas, many of its inhabitants emigrated to the colonies in search of fortune. Those Ribetanos who returned successfully from their adventures in the colonies, known as indianos, represented a small local bourgeoisie and were the origin of the urban growth of the town in the 19th century. Thanks to their wealth, they built unique buildings that contributed to the architectural development of the city.

I enjoyed learning about the history of chocolate, which became popular when the Spaniards returned to the country after having learned to process it in other lands and having contributed to the export of cocoa from Latin America. They mainly brought with them a taste for chocolate, which became a popular drink among the upper classes.

Another interesting thing I discovered in this celebration was the art of making guitars with cigarette or cigar boxes (Havana cigars) I am not sure where this practice originated, but I guess it has to do with Cuba.
They are a work of craftsmanship and pieces very sought after and valued by collectors.

I continued touring the stops and found a mechanical piano or pianola that captivated me. A series of classical pieces punched on a paper roll was played on the pianola with the help of the pianist.
A compressed air system is supplied by a set of bellows, which are usually activated by pedals.
The effect is very romantic and has an air of yesteryear that I like to enjoy.

Encontr茅 tambi茅n artesan铆a en m谩rmol.

I also found marble craftsmanship. Where each piece was sculpted by hand with incredible dedication. There were house names as they were used at that time and they were true works of art.

The weaver lady also represented the women who manually made the blankets and fabrics. They tried to offer each image obtaining a surprising and pleasant result, including the baskets of yarn and wool.

Another artisan who captured the attention of young and old, was this artist of "Cer谩micas Majo" with his potter's wheel, threads to cut and above all his ingenuity and imagination to achieve useful and very funny figures.

Entre los men煤s que se pod铆an disfrutar hab铆a, entre otras delicias: Rabo encendido, sandwich cubano de puerco, ropa vieja, etc.

Finally, I was able to enjoy a great variety of tables with cheeses, wines and dried fruits that captured the attention of those of us who gathered at this celebration.
Many restaurants in town were given the task of preparing special dishes allegorical to the moment, almost all of them Cuban cuisine. Among the menus that could be enjoyed were, among other delicacies: Rabo encendido, Cuban pork sandwich, ropa vieja, etc.
This is the VI edition of this original festival of the return of the Indians. I will be watching for more next year.
