I'm not a fan of movies where animals talk; I've always found them a bit simplistic, no offense intended. Of course, I've seen a few, but they aren't my favorites. In fact, I haven't brought myself to watch the live-action version of The Lion King, a cartoon that I love. In a cartoon, I see the animals’ speech as part of the charm, but if the animal is portrayed in its natural state and still talks, it’s not something I’m crazy about.

However, a movie I saw recently where animals talk really caught my attention and left me thinking about one line in particular. It’s a film starring Hugh Jackman, one of my favorite actors, whom I consider a well-rounded performer—since, in addition to acting, he can sing and dance, creating a spectacle that transcends the screen, as was clear in The Greatest Showman.

The line that kept echoing in my mind was: “The winter sheep.” It’s from the movie The Detective Sheep; in it, Jackman plays the shepherd of a flock of sheep to whom he reads detective stories. They live in peace until they decide to investigate a murder; in doing so, they must push beyond their limits and the peaceful calm in which they had been living; stepping out of their comfort zone will be key to achieving their goal.

The phrase “winter lamb” is used to refer to a lamb born in winter that does not follow the usual rule of being born in spring; for this reason, they live under the stigma of bad luck. Not being born during the natural cycle causes the flock to reject it.

This character, represented by the winter lamb, made me think a lot about the times when we find ourselves in a situation where we don’t fit in with everyone else.

Feeling like an outsider in a setting is sometimes part of life—feeling that you don’t fit in somewhere simply because your values don’t align with the place you’re in. That can lead to rejection from those around you because they notice you don’t feel at ease, and at the same time, you, too, reject that environment that doesn’t represent who you are.

I’ve thought about the times when I’ve felt like a winter sheep—in places where I don’t see enough respect or consideration, in hostile environments where complaining is the norm, or simply when I’m stopped at a red light and hear the horn of someone who thinks I won’t obey the traffic signal just because it suits them.

I’m grateful for the places where I feel at ease, where there are people with whom I share a sense of the beauty of life and an acceptance of others as unique and wonderful beings.
