It began at eleven o’clock at night with the infernal horns he keeps in the trunk of his old car. A relentless barrage of vallenato was the soundtrack to that night’s malevolent spell.

The alcohol helps him become as brazen as can be. Irrational, rude, and without a shred of empathy, the noise-maker continues hour after hour with his aberrant noise, which peaks at nearly ninety decibels, according to my app.

That’s how the night goes; I barely manage to fall asleep, and only for short periods of time. It’s like being asleep and awake at the same time. I feel rage and helplessness—emotions so common in this country that it’s frightening to have to experience them because of an abusive neighbor who doesn’t understand that we must respect other citizens’ right to sleep peacefully so they can rest.

It’s 6:30 in the morning; the roar of the music wakes me from the little sleep I managed to get. What’s next? Getting out of bed—because what’s the point of continuing to struggle to get a good night’s sleep if the irritating vallenato blaring at full volume is going to keep preventing me from doing so?

Was the noise-maker not taught values at home, or did he choose to flush them down the toilet and make abuse a constant in his life?

I get up and gather the laundry; I think about talking to the noise-maker. Laundry basket in hand, I step outside. I motion for him to come over to the fence around my house. The noise-maker crosses the street with a drink in his hand. I remember him as a child; he hasn’t grown much, now that I look closely. His gaze is vacant; despite all the alcohol, he flashes a smile as I speak to him.

With a touch of sarcasm, I tell him I admire him because—how can he celebrate so much in a country like this? With the electricity crisis alone, I don’t feel like celebrating anything.

I ask him to turn down the music—there are elderly people in my house—and point out that he’ll eventually go to sleep while the rest of us are left with eyes like boiled eggs; he keeps flashing that somewhat sinister smile. I wonder if there’s still a human being left in there.

I go on my way; I’m going to do the laundry. He turns down the volume on the music. I don’t thank him because, really, he should turn it off completely; he should be more humane and show more empathy, but that’s impossible—he’s just a pathetic person who measures his worth by a cheap sound system he installed in his car.

I feel sorry for you, noise-maker; I hope you learn to respect other people’s rights, I hope you grow up someday, or at least I hope you move—way, way far away from here.
