6:52 a.m. I’m at the beach, ready to start my walk; all I need to do is put on my hat to protect myself from the sun. I’m at Playa Lido, across from the playground. I’ll walk toward the Virgin Mary monument and then continue on to the Eurobuilding Hotel, using the walking path and any dirt paths I can find; that will be my route for today.
I’m not sure if I’ll go for a jog today, but it’s very likely that I will, since on other occasions, even when I feel too lazy to run, I end up jogging anyway. For now, I’m focusing on sticking to my route.
Along the way, I pass various walkers—adults and young people who’ve come out to exercise. Two girls who were walking start to run. Ahead of me is also a woman in red athletic pants; I walk until I catch up to her and pass her. I wonder if walking slowly is actually beneficial for her health. I wonder if her body will realize she’s exercising or if it’ll treat the gentle movement as just a normal walk.
A few steps further on, a man sitting on the edge of the low wall that separates the walkway from the sandy beach is showing a woman some things he has in a blue bag.
I continue on my way, taking the opportunity to look at the sea and listen to its sound without slowing down. I pass the statue of the Virgin and approach the avenue; I turn right, and here the street becomes a mix of pavement and sand.
When I reach a Chinese restaurant, I see a dog barking there; it seems to be calling out to someone as it circles the area.
I keep walking; time seems to fly by. It’s Monday, and I notice more traffic than usual; maybe this isn’t one of my favorite routes because sometimes I can smell the smog.
I arrive at the hotel and turn around; the dog is still barking, waiting until a minibus pulls up in front of the restaurant. A man gets out, and the dog jumps for joy; now I know who he was waiting for.
I take a few photos of the beautiful scenery and see the man with the blue bag again; he seems to be asking some elderly people for money; one of them refuses, and the man doesn’t look very happy. A dog grateful for the presence of one person, a man annoyed by the presence of others.
7:43 a.m. My run, which lasted a total of 51 minutes, is over—I jogged for 5 minutes and 16 seconds; it may not seem like much, but for me it’s a good achievement. So I reward myself with a delicious cold coconut.
