There’s a special kind of joy that comes with harvest season, and today I experienced it firsthand on our cucumber farm. After weeks of planting, staking, watering and watching the vines grow, it was finally time to reap what we sowed.
The first picture shows exactly how green and full the farm was. The cucumber vines were climbing the wooden stakes, with big leaves and yellow flowers everywhere. You can see one of our guys bent down with a bucket, moving through the rows and picking the mature cucumbers one by one. Farming is hard work, but walking through that field and seeing the fruits ready made it all worth it.
Look at the pile! We spread out a big sack on the ground and started gathering everything in one place. The cucumbers were fresh, firm, and a beautiful light green color. Some were long, some were short, but all of them looked healthy. We also had a pink and yellow bucket filled with water where we dropped some of the cucumbers to keep them fresh right after picking.
In one of the photos you’ll see two guys sitting beside the big heap, just taking a short break and admiring the work. That feeling when you see the results of your labor spread out like that is unmatched.
Harvesting is never a one-man job. In the group pictures you can see us standing together with handfuls of cucumbers, smiling with pride. There’s mama in her wrapper, the guys in jerseys and singlets, all of us involved. Some were picking, some were sorting, and some were arranging them neatly on the sack.
We were also sorting out the ones for the market and the ones to keep for seeds. Everyone had a role, and we were laughing, chatting, and encouraging each other while we worked. That’s the beauty of farm work, it brings people together.
To me, harvesting cucumber is more than just getting food to sell. It’s proof that patience and hard work pay off. From planting tiny seeds to seeing this huge harvest, it reminds you that growth takes time.
Cucumber is also in high demand. People use it for salads, juice, snacks, and even skincare. So knowing that these cucumbers will go to market and put food on someone’s table makes the stress feel small.
Seeing the full sacks, the busy hands, and the green field behind us made me grateful. Farming teaches you discipline, and harvest teaches you gratitude.
