  • How do insects walk above the surface of water ?


Since you were a kid have you seen some insects walk on water and have you ever been wondering why can they be able to walk on water but you cannot ? Well... Because SCIENCE of course.


Water Strider

Most tiny insects such as water-strider and cricket are able to walk on the surface of water because of what we call the Surface Tension. Surface Tension is a phenomenon which the water's molecules are pulled every molecules equally in every direction by neighbor's molecules, Only the molecules that sitting above on the surface which aren't pulled because molecules in air are foreign to the molecules in water.

So the water's molecules decide to improve their relation with other more strongly just like when you're participate in a party and you know nobody except your rarely talk to classmate, You're tend to have chit-chat with them rather than be completely silent at the corner of darkness.

According to John Bush, A mathematician and also a specialist in fluid dynamics at MIT said that when insect walks it bends the surface of water but doesn't break it and then the surface bounce back make the insect move forward, It's also depends on the weight of insect too.

If the weight of insect is greater than the force that hold the water's molecules together the insect will submerge.
Who know that Jesus have some pretty neat science trick up his sleeve ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
