Read the post from ozohu@ozohu i was robbed in northern nigeria and blacktarri@blacktarri about my first experience with thieves it reminded me of the one time I was almost robbed.

I was in my third year in school and in most universities in Nigeria the third year is when the students are asked to go for IT(industrial training) training to give students practical Knowledge of the course studied. I spent 6 months out and I missed school so much and my friends that we agreed to resume school on the exact day of resumption.

Normally Most students run from resuming the first day of school because the hostel Would be so empty, the cafeteria wouldn’t have resumed even classes that week won’t be so serious, they could just come that day just to leave their homes, drop off their bags in their rooms, and are out for the rest of the week. since we had a lot of catching up to do few of my friends agreed to resume the very first day of resumption.

I schooled in Delta state Nigeria and when we resumed that day as planned, we saw lots of students dropping off their things but we knew they had no plans of staying in the hostel, by evening we went around the hostel and realized we were just a handful left in the compound, we had no choice but to stay. we decided to sleep in one room rather than sleep alone in our various rooms seeing our roommates were not around which was the best thing that happened to us that night.

We talked, laughed, did our catching
Up till about midnight when the generator was out meaning light out, we were all asleep when I heard a voice from my window telling me to open my door and submit everything I have quietly, I opened my eyes, jumped out of my bed, and shouted to alert my friends.

The man kept on pointing the touch lightly on my face and I couldn’t see him well all he kept on saying was we should arrange all our gadgets and money before he gets to the door .

My friends at this point were praying and begging, but somehow I felt this boldness overwhelm me, I shouted at the man to stop pointing his touch in my eyes, I asked if he planned to blind me

He got angry and said I was disrespectful and he would show me how to respect my elders

I went to my door and locked it again, used one of the bunks to block the door, and my friends and I, entered the bathroom and locked the door while we started calling security, our school CSO(chief security officer) and anyone we knew could come around.

I was confident because I knew the door to our room was complicated, the room was an inner of a bigger room, just the windows that were outside, we stayed in the bathroom praying they didn’t see the door, but even if they did we had secured the door enough to make it difficult to break through and besides these robbers were without a weapon.

We could hear the robbers hitting doors from room to room, I could hear the other students around screaming and crying, it took about one more hour before we finally heard the sound of the police siren.

We chose not to come out yet till we hear a familiar voice like the CSO or our hostel matron.

We stayed put for about 3 more hours, luckily the bathroom was clean and comfortable enough to accommodate 4 of us. Our matron came to the hostel and we could hear her speaking to the other student outside, so we finally decided to come out.

I was so pissed, I had so many questions, where was the security team, where was she and the other matrons? Because the hostel wasn’t full the workers too decided to leave. What if something had happened to us, if it wasn’t resumption yet why ask the students to resume, I was so furious because they emptied the other students of their belongings. They took their time To do the job like it was well planned.

I was grateful my friends and I were safe and our belongings and the incident made the school double security in the hostel and change the staff too.

The next morning we all went back home because it wasn’t possible to spend another night there after what happened.

picture of me from wayback 2017. Thank Goodness for Facebook Memories.

I came back 2 weeks later, it took me time To not have nightmares over the incident but I got better. It's been over 5 years but Some days when I remember the incident, it has a way of playing with my mind, even if I had to be bold and strong for my friends at the time but afterward when everything rushed back like a flash it gave me this strong fear.

It is really sad the length these thieves/robbers go to disrupt someone else’s life just for Their interest.
