Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo
It is really interesting and important to highlight the fact that the text does not talk about loving others more than oneself, because that would be to fall into self-degradation by giving the other person a place above us, and in that way we would not learn anything.
A great truth that we need to highlight is that if we love ourselves, take care of ourselves, attend to our needs; when we show concern for the well-being of others it will be something genuine, which will be born, flow and be reflected from our heart to the heart of the other. For this reason, love for others begins with loving ourselves first.
Inner and physical well-being is a product of the harmony between many aspects of life, that is to say, that our health does not depend on an external agent such as a doctor or therapist as many people think, but that within us there is a power with which we can heal ourselves and help others to achieve their well-being. Beyond the techniques or practices that are used to be healthy, there is the vision of each one, the attitude with which we face health and illness.
If we are balanced internally it will be reflected on the outside and health will be the result of our ability to maintain or regain balance. In my work as a teacher I have had the opportunity to make friends with many of my representatives and from there I will take a life experience that has served me as an introspection on many occasions and that I know could be of help and reflection.
Ana is the mother of two girls who were 7 and 9 years old at the time. Her girls were in the 2nd and 4th grades of primary school. She was the wife of a man with whom she shared a room in his mother's house and with whom, in her own words, she knew she would not get very far, however she stayed with him.
The girls' performance was good, although in the middle of the school year the girl I was looking after began to miss school, which is why the school formed a committee to visit her and find out why she wasn't attending. The reason? They didn't have food at home. The girl who was in 4th grade was staying at an aunt's house and she was attending classes. We asked about the girls' father and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. The woman broke down and said that "he had left her for someone else" and she had stayed with his mother.
In the neighbourhood, word had spread that he abused her no matter where she was and no matter who was in front of him. In other words, the girls had been silent witnesses to it, but apparently she did not care.
The girl continued to be absent and with her little sister, I sent a note to her mother. She came home from the hospital that day very tired, but her tiredness was not just from illness, it was a tiredness that came from inside her. One that came from the thousands of disappointments that she had not dared to give up. After talking about the girl's situation, about the evaluations she had not done and the ones she was missing, without wanting to but without slowing down, I asked her, "Why haven't you left? I put my notebook down and we changed the topic of conversation. We began to talk about her qualities both as a mother and as a person; I told her that she needed to make a change and start thinking about a real future for her and her daughters, that they deserved it and her daughters needed to see an example of Self-Love in their mother.
A few days passed and I met her at the bus stop, with a different look on her face and an expression that matched her look and I asked her, "How is everything going? She replied, "Better teacher, I found a job in a shoe shop. I start next week and I'm seeing if I'm going to go to my mum's house".
With what she told me I felt that she had understood that she needed to be more productive and proactive, to see more for herself and her daughters. That she had finally understood that she needed to love and respect herself more so that she could demand respect from others, including her husband.
Illnesses often come from all sides and can damage us deep inside. We cannot allow anyone or anything to take away or disturb our emotional health and affect our mental and physical health. If we love ourselves and in the same spirit we face difficulties, we will manage to remain balanced, healthy and filled with love.
