This is my entry for @takeru255’s writing contest dedicated to the Jolius Blast card. Part of the challenge has been condensing these five years together on Hive and Splinterlands; I hope you enjoy it. Now, join me once more back on the road.
The echoing, wild laughter of Ghezira still resounded, trapped forever within the pages of Esbat’s spellbook. The marauder was now just another archon in his collection, but the cost of that victory in the Drybone Badlands had nearly claimed their lives and consumed a vast portion of their energy.
Barely four wagons made up the caravan—it almost felt bold to bestow such a name upon those rickety mage's carts—which was now pressing into the wild realm of the Pristine Northwest. Like a traveling peddler, the battle mage had once again placed his trust in fortune rather than staked power, a risky gamble that had paid off for him in the past when recruiting Lorkus or Venka.
Rewards that had tipped the scales in his favor, yet the toll this time was all too evident. Unable to stop mid-way through this new call to arms, he trusted he would find the resources to repair the damage, even as rumors grew of the wrath of Grimdave, the eldest of the Treant folk.
Despite it all, hope overflowed in his carts far more than the grain from his lands—a handful of common plots scattered across Pretoria to which he never devoted any time, though they were enough to buy him a title.
Something that the adept who first began crafting his spellbook in the Chaos Legion could never have imagined, utterly unprepared as he was to calculate taxes, weigh expenses, or offer financial advice. For some bewildering reason, Dark Energy Crystals always seemed to be in short supply in his pouch... even if he would then wager them without restraint in every tournament.
Even so, it was those hot streaks of luck that kept him climbing along the path, seeking the next dimensional rift that might lend him its essence to summon his archons back into battle once more.
But he wasn't the only one pursuing those fractures. The snow had melted in the wake of a powerful creature. From the rear cart, Esbat could have sworn that the Djinn Malric had taken form in a warrior who, at that very moment, was sealing the rift they had been tracking for days.
Thanks to frequently summoning Bartalamas, Esbat’s Djinn tongue was not entirely rusty, so he shouted with all his might at the stranger.
“Stop, I need that power!” he commanded the fiery figure, as though the mere arrogance of a battle mage were enough to stay the sword that threatened to close the rift.
“Seek balance instead, mage,” came the thundering reply from Jolius Blast.
The warrior plunged his blade, wreathed in raw fire, directly into the heart of the rift. A shockwave bursting with pure heat swept away the snow, causing the caravan's beasts to rear up. Esbat unrolled his deck in haste, using the last spark of essence to bring back Arkemis the Bear to shield his carts with a forcefield.
When the glare faded, the rift was gone, leaving behind only scorched earth and Jolius, who observed the stubborn mage with curiosity—a man who had chosen to spend his final energy defending his caravan rather than attacking him.
And that was how Esbat, without spinning wheels or stopping by the cash desk at the Circa Royale, met Jolius Blast.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story all the way to the end. If you enjoyed this little adventure in the lands of Pretoria, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments about Esbat and Jolius Blast’s encounter. See you in the arena.
