Drink for me means something totally different from what others mean by drink. I'm not talking about alcoholic beverages but about tea. After quitting drinking coffee I needed something to drink as the habit won't go away from one day to another. Tea seemed like a good idea and felt good to my stomach in the morning. I don't use sugar or any other sweetener, just tea and lemon.
For the last ten months I've been drinking different herbal teas with fresh lemon juice for medical reason and a black tea or green tea mid day to keep me fresh. I'm not saying tea can substitute coffee as not even black tea can give me the boost coffee can but it's ok.
The good thing about drinking tea is you can't drink too much. There are days when I have three teas, one of which is prescribed my doctor and other days I only have one. It depends. Having fresh lemon juice every day also helps, it contributes to my Vitamin C intake, it kept me safe during winter.
Now that the weather is very hot, it's like 32C outside almost every day, one may think tea is not drinkable any more. I know many people prefer cold drinks and ice cream but not me. I don't really like very cold drinks and eat ice cream mostly during winter.
Scientists say a hot drink will cool you down more than an ice-cold beverage
According to Professor Peter McNaughton, a neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge, consuming hot beverages, such as tea or hot water, will raise your core body temperature. And this makes you to sweat at an increased rate.
Nerves in our mouths and in our upper digestive tract respond to the heat of the beverage, stimulating the brain to produce more sweat. And as it evaporates, the sweat effectively cools you down.
Water evaporates very quickly from the skin. And when water evaporates, McNaughton explains, "that cools you down." source
This is not why I'm still drinking tea during summer, but because I like it and can still drink it.
Instead of reaching for an ice-cold soft drink or artificially sweetened juices when you're feeling hot and bothered, McNaughton suggests "a good cup of hot tea, because it doesn't have other effects" - like huge levels of caffeine.source
