📚 Book Review: Fourth Wing (Empyrean 1) [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy me paso por acá con una reseña super especial de un libro que quería leer hace rato. Les estoy hablando de Alas de sangre, el primer libro de la saga Empíreo de la autora Rebecca Yarros.

Hello, readers! Today I'm here with a very special review of a book I've been wanting to read for a while. I'm talking about Fourth Wing, the first book in the Empyrean series by author Rebecca Yarros.

La historia sigue a Violet Sorrengail, una joven de 20 años que se preparó toda su vida para formar parte del Cuadrante de Escribas del colegio Basgiath, pero sus planes se ven alterados cuando su madre, que es la comandante general del Cuadrante de Jinetes, la obliga a ir a este sector para convertirse en una jinete de dragón como ella y sus hermanos. Este es el Cuadrante más letal y con más índices de muertes, pero al mismo tiempo es el más respetado por las élites de Navarre. Aunque cuando sos pequeña y frágil como Violet, sabes que tenes que usar todo el ingenio y la astucia posible para sobrevivir. No solo a las duras pruebas y entrenamientos, ni a que uno de los líderes de Ala, Xaden Riorson, sea tan hermoso como letal, sino a que también seas lo suficientemente digna para que un dragón quiera vincularse contigo y no te mate en el proceso. Violet sabe que tiene las de perder, pero está decidida a demostrarles a todos que no es la mujer frágil que parece, y en el proceso terminará por encontrarse a sí misma y a dejar salir su potencial.

The story follows Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old woman who has spent her entire life preparing to join the Scribe Quadrant at Basgiath College, but her plans are disrupted when her mother, who is the commander-in-chief of the Rider Quadrant, forces her to go to this sector to become a dragon rider like her and her brothers. This is the most lethal Quadrant with the highest death rates, but at the same time it is the most respected by the elites of Navarre. Although when you are small and fragile like Violet, you know that you have to use all your ingenuity and cunning to survive. Not only do you have to endure harsh trials and training, and the fact that one of the leaders of the Wing, Xaden Riorson, is as handsome as he is lethal, but you also have to be worthy enough for a dragon to bond with you and not kill you in the process. Violet knows she's at a disadvantage, but she's determined to prove to everyone that she's not the fragile woman she appears to be, and in the process she'll end up finding herself and unleashing her potential.

Se puede decir que es la clase de libros por los que amo la lectura, me encanta conectar tanto con una historia que me mantiene por completo obsesionada y pensando en lo próximo que pasará cuando no lo estoy leyendo. Fue toda una adicción y lo agradezco, necesitaba leer algo del estilo y la fantasía siempre es un género al que vuelvo cada tanto, más si hay dragones porque los amo. Este libro me dio todo lo que esperaba y mucho más.

You could say that this is the kind of book that makes me love reading. I love connecting so deeply with a story that it keeps me completely obsessed and thinking about what will happen next when I'm not reading it. It was completely addictive, and I'm grateful for that. I needed to read something like this, and fantasy is always a genre I come back to every now and then, especially if there are dragons because I love them. This book gave me everything I expected and much more.

Es una historia que te atrapa de entrada, es casi imposible no simpatizar con la protagonista y lo que está viviendo, parece como si cada día podría ser el último y eso te mantiene enganchado a la lectura esperando la próxima tragedia y los retos con los que se tengan que enfrentar. Yo estaba acá por los dragones en primera instancia, pero estos no son el foco principal hasta la mitad del libro más o menos. Aunque cuando aparecieron se robaron toda mi atención. Tairn fue todo lo que me gusta que sean estas criaturas increíbles, con un sentido del humor muy especial, y Andarna se robó mi corazón de entrada, que belleza 😍.

It's a story that grabs you right from the start. It's almost impossible not to sympathize with the protagonist and what she's going through. It seems as if every day could be her last, and that keeps you hooked on the book, waiting for the next tragedy and the challenges they'll have to face. I was here for the dragons in the first place, but they don't become the main focus until about halfway through the book. However, when they did appear, they stole my attention. Tairn was everything I love about these incredible creatures, with a very special sense of humor, and Andarna stole my heart right away. What a beauty 😍.

También tengo que hablar del coprotagonista masculino, acá Xaden Riorson, ¡qué hombre! Apenas apareció ya me había movido toda la estantería, pero no entendía muy bien la dinámica con Violet, ya que parecía odiarla, pero luego es el que más la ayuda. O sea, todos sabemos lo que va a pasar con estos dos, pero igual no deja de sorprenderme. Me gustó el giro que tomó y que fuera una especie de Slow Burn que se fue construyendo de manera lenta pero segura. Amé la actitud de Violet, me gustó mucho como personaje femenino, mostró una astucia y fortaleza impecable, pero a parte de esto, mostró seguridad a pesar del miedo y se animó a dar los pasos necesarios para sobrevivir. Aunque, por sobre todo, amé que no fuera ninguna migajera, ella se paró frente a Xaden y le dijo lo que sentía y si él otro no daba de su parte no le iba a tocar más un pelo. Me encantó su actitud.

I also have to mention the male co-star, Xaden Riorson—what a man! As soon as he appeared, he had already moved my entire bookshelf, but I didn't quite understand the dynamic with Violet, since he seemed to hate her, but then he's the one who helps her the most. I mean, we all know what's going to happen with these two, but it still surprises me. I liked the twist it took and that it was a kind of slow burn that built up slowly but surely. I loved Violet's attitude. I really liked her as a female character. She showed impeccable cunning and strength, but apart from that, she showed confidence despite her fear and dared to take the necessary steps to survive. Above all, I loved that she wasn't a pushover. She stood up to Xaden and told him how she felt, and if he didn't do his part, she wouldn't touch him again. I loved her attitude.

Por otro lado, pero no menos importante, este libro tiene una trama muy interesante que seguro se explorará más en los siguientes libros. Ya que hay una especie de guerra, pero no la que todos parecen creer, sino que los líderes están escondiendo una verdad más grande y peligrosa. Hay todo un enredo político que espero ir descubriendo a medida que vaya leyendo los otros libros. Por lo pronto, les digo que amé esta historia, me hizo reír, me hizo emocionar, me hizo vibrar y suspirar. Fue una agradable montaña rusa de emociones, así que está más que recomendado por mi parte, espero que se den la oportunidad de leerlo.

On the other hand, but no less important, this book has a very interesting plot that will surely be explored further in the following books. There is a kind of war, but not the one everyone seems to believe in; rather, the leaders are hiding a greater and more dangerous truth. There is a whole political entanglement that I hope to discover as I read the other books. For now, I can tell you that I loved this story. It made me laugh, it made me emotional, it made me vibrate and sigh. It was a pleasant roller coaster of emotions, so I highly recommend it. I hope you give yourself the opportunity to read it.
