He did not believe in giving pocket money to the children, so I never got any money from home to spend.

My parents were the same. I always had to ask them. Which went not without arguing with them. Because I had to find reasons, it made me not giving up too easily on them. I got on their nerves quite often. This trained me to turn a "no" into a "yes". I felt proud every time I managed to do that.

Your experience I also call positively framing a restriction that was initially perceived as negative. Your resourcefulness and acceptance of this situation is to my liking, as it has not made you feel small, but has allowed you to find an alternative. It's wonderful to experience your own self-efficacy in this way! :)
