The whole thing feels like it was told very loosely from the hip, not searching long for expressions, as if the natural vocabulary had flowed from mind to hand right at the start. Very nicely narrated, of good quality. The fact that you are probably (?) not a native English speaker gives your expression something unusual. Very nice!
The tradition of getting together and home-cooked food is probably one of those that everyone in the world knows and the usual quibbles as well, the irony towards "the Exiles", HaHa, they are not very popular, are they. Would they be if they were less uppity? But behind every condescending attitude lies human insecurity. I would have found it exciting to be told about a character who was able to rise above this.
