Wow, very very good.
That was gripping. You kept me close to the hunter, actually you let me become the hunter and I really like that he missed the moment to shoot the Firefox, especially the "damn, damn" after the fact and the realization that in a moment of compassion he could very well have ended his own life. To afford such a thing in such a harsh environment, one would actually have to cry "stupidity!", but one can also say that beast and man have recognized each other, although I would only claim this for the man who has recognized the animal in himself and the beast is simply a beast. Man is probably unique in this respect since he has come to consciousness and suffers from his own consciousness too much at times. What beasts rather don't do, otherwise they would build machines and ride skateboards.

A really successful and narratively sophisticated story. I like that you chose the male perspective. The fact that I could immediately put myself in the setting is due to the matter-of-factness with which I as a reader simply accept something well written, as I do here, and something badly written is much more likely to catch your eye, because well, it's bad. ;) Nowhere stumbled over it here.
