Thank you so much for your response to the story. I enjoyed reading your perspective on it. How someone interprets what they read is always fascinating and, yes, exactly the reason you write. Your view differing from mine and what I had thought of the story makes it so interesting to have a conversation.
For me, Betty's little spaceship is an intimate sphere, the confinement she is in, a kind of cocoon, an environment that doesn't leave much room and the loneliness of a spaceship pilot making long journeys challenges one to be creative. Ideas are born on such journeys, the mind that is not busy enough wants to deal with more than the technical maintenance systems and navigation. Space serves as unexplored territory.
At heart, Betty is an epicure who does not want to have her encounters spoiled by the ephemeral. She wants to let herself and others experience something unusual. This will is in a way "heard", as you have also interpreted it, by an entity that happens to turn its "eye" on Betty's ship. This entity is powerful, as is not difficult to feel, but it does not use this power to frighten, it approaches in such a way that it arrives carefully and gently, as if on the silken line of a free-floating thread, and realises its intention. It is an agreement in sharing an intention that emanates from Betty and is answered in this way, yes, exactly.
You could compare it to the sun and its rays hitting your face on a beautiful day and warming it, causing an indescribable tickle deep in your belly. A sun, if I endow it with a consciousness, though in its core and body violent, consuming and destroying everything that approaches it, yet the distance, the rays that destroy near, diminish their violence with increasing distance and where they do no harm they give warmth. It is at this extension that contact arises. I then exaggerated a little and also gave the entity a wink and something foolish, very subtly, but that's how I felt it. A kind of smiling presence that has fun visiting spaceship pilots.
This experience remains mysterious, must remain so, from my point of view. Betty's experience will not be repeated, she is almost certain of that. Much like when you've had a once-in-a-lifetime trip that you know will never be repeated in that way. So it's a gift that Betty doesn't want to spoil by letting Harry search the archives.
Yes, the illustrations are really classic, aren't they? I was delighted to find the book with me!
Again, thank you so much for letting me know your thoughts :)
