I'm currently reading a book by Lewis Mumford, "Myth of the Machine". https://monoskop.org/images/4/45/Mumford_Lewis_Mythos_der_Maschine.pdf - it's in German, but maybe there's an English-language version of his work from the 70s. It is a book of the century from my point of view and describes very well the fallacies of civilisations.
