Crying does not have the purpose to avoid something, it's a pure emotion, in the same way laughter is a pure emotion without any purpose whatsoever. Because, what happens when you have an emotion? You would like to let it be there without judging it yourself or being judged for it. In crying you admit your sadness, in laughing your humour. I can say the better I am able to cry or to laugh, the faster I make peace. It's a direct way towards my humanity and to those of others.
Making peace and getting calm is to not avoid emotions of sadness or happiness. It's to accept them as being human.
I see it the other way around: crying is not a way of reacting to misfortunes in life, it is in the first place the direct expression of a human being who feels emotional in the face of disconnection.
Avoiding tears, like avoiding to stay with feelings of sadness and empathy disconnects us and the result is called a "big depression". In pressing down these very basic emotions you find the cause for aggression and hard heartedness, in the end you have despair. Also, if you were able to avoid crying in not showing tears to others at all all the time, you lose your your connection to this calming power at all. And you judge it as a sign of weakness, which crying is not. Because you lack experience in crying.
Have you ever heard about the statement that if you feel deeply angry it is because underneath there is a huge sadness? I can say for myself that that's the way it is.
