To put it a little extreme, Buddhists celebrate death and mourn birth. Any death could mean leaving samsara behind and not being reborn. So when someone dies, you could have a nice celebration, and when someone is born, you could pray for a short life. Growing old is really not a particular pleasure, but rather an ever-increasing effort to keep death at a distance. Growing old is a pleasure because you no longer need to reproduce, your ambitious plans are behind you, and you can practice grandfatherly or grandmotherly indulgence for the children and infants. It can be a pleasure not to put a wall between oneself and death and to be kind to it. In this respect everything I do or do not do has meaning, but no truth.
