Following the natural disasters in my country, my health hasn’t been great; I’ve had to find the courage and the physical and mental strength I didn’t think I had to carry on, whilst dealing with the post-earthquake neurological after-effects… In this regard, I’ve made significant progress in overcoming my paranoia at the slightest tremor.
Since then, my body has been under immense stress, during which I neglected my care as a kidney patient; I was focused on avoiding further epileptic seizures. I was regaining control of the situation, little by little – like many others, we want to carry on and return to ‘normality’.
I began to experience discomfort in my lower back and put it down to sleeping in an awkward position or sleeping on the floor to cool off from the heat during the power cuts; this was masking a developing case of pyelonephritis that was progressing very rapidly.

I started experiencing haematuria and, when I realised it was coming from my kidneys, I immediately had to have blood tests and a urine culture – I’m currently awaiting the results of the latter so that I can be assessed for treatment.
Despite the discomfort and renal colic, nothing can stop me from creating content – it’s my passion and I love it. My absence is something almost everyone in Aragua is suffering from, and it’s due to power cuts lasting more than 11 hours, reaching a point where, between one cut and the next, there’s only an hour of electricity; the rest of the time there’s none. This greatly exacerbates the discomfort caused by the heat and our worries.
It’s sad to have to visit two hospitals and clinics in search of one with electricity so we could be treated, only to find that none of them had any. As a result, many patients who needed specialist tests had to leave and wait at home. How can hospitals operate without electricity? They can’t even deal with emergencies, and in some cases I’ve seen them illuminate a patient and treat them using the light from a mobile phone torch…

Bendiciones.

Nobody says anything; it’s not about normalising the situation. It’s common to feel worn down by it all the time, to speak out and not be heard, but instead to be persecuted. This hasn’t improved since 3 January; if anything, it’s got worse.
Amidst all the negativity, I’ve decided not to let it drag me down because that’s even worse; I need to heal and look after my body with a positive attitude. I’ve been meditating and went out for a short walk nearby, meeting up with friends to take my mind off the bad things – even though they’re obvious, given that there’s no electricity anywhere in the town.
During my meditations, I usually repeat phrases like mantras; in the middle of one, I said to myself: ‘It’s not the hardship, it’s the attitude towards the hardship.’ This was an attempt to reprogram my mind to change my attitude towards the problem, approaching it as something temporary and reinforcing the desire to improve and heal.
This has helped me a great deal to stay optimistic, because although fear sometimes overwhelms me, we must carry on, and life is TODAY. A positive attitude is what allows us to overcome difficulties as quickly as possible and ensures that our bodies aren’t affected by stress.
I believe we’ve all faced major trials in which we’ve seen just how strong we are, how persevering we are, and that resilience is a virtue.
On the other hand, although the outlook here doesn’t look very bright, everything is temporary; I remain confident and focus on the solutions that are on the horizon, and I try to do my bit – whatever is within my power – which is: maintaining control over myself.
Everything will be alright.
Blessings.
