there's a lovely safe harbor on the east side of Larviksfjord, just by the mouth of the Lågen River. The both the popular marina and the harbor are called Hølen. while the harbor itself is well protected for wind from all directions, the passage into it can be tricky. the current can be strong and especially when the river is flooded and the sandbanks at the mouth of the river continually drift.
to guide seafarers in to safe waters there is a light on Oterøy marking the west side of the passage with a unique 8 second blink pattern to identify itself but more importantly it has 3 color sectors- red, green and white. approaching the harbor boats must keep in a narrow stripe where the blinking light is white. if it is red the boat too far east and at risk of running aground and if it is green the boat is too far west and likewise in danger.
but this is a reflection community not a boating or maritime one so hereafter i shall focus on some reflections
the hexagonal housing has 4 glass panes facing the sea and harbor through which the light can be seen. fortunately for a reflection hunter these glass panes not only transmit the signal but also reflect the surroundings. the image above is facing out to sea with the rocky shore below
this image is facing across the passage to the opposite shore built up with houses and docks
standing up close it is possible to see through the glass directly to the shiny circular light itself reflecting the wonderful surroundings and the photographer who in this case happens to be me.
