entry reflections 187: reflections of the modern world

reflections are one of the main features of the glassy surfaces prevalent in modern architecture. architects of earlier buildings often attempted to create the best possible mirror images of the surroundings, more modern buildings are more likely to be constructed such that the reflections are distorted or even shattered. the continuous movement on the street creates the effect of an abstract motion picture on the buildings facade

perhaps the architect is expressing a view of the world as one of chaos and confusion, consisting of bits and pieces that do not form a complete understanding of reality. we are presented with an indecipherable smattering of jumbled images that are virtually impossible to make sense of. pieces of a puzzle whose shapes fit well enough to create a structure yet obviously should not belong together. so we cannot grasp the true nature of reality. without a trace of overview or sense of unity and belonging our culture is disintegrating, floundering and sinking. one is left to ponder whether perhaps this is not accidental, but rather by design.
