Decentralization

While decentralization and the extent of decentralization on public blockchains have been subject to much debate, the Hyperledger framework attempts to move transactional verification from a single administered system with controls by a few to a permissioned workflow system.

This concept is a boon to supply chain markets and other transactional systems such as on healthcare because there are many touchpoints for each transaction. For example, let's consider Walmart's grocery shopping department.

Permissioning

From the farmer, to the wholesale dealer to the shipping agent to Walmart's procurement department to the end retail store and the final consumer, the grocery product needs to be validated by many people along the way. In a permissioned blockchain model like on Hyperledger, it is possible for each one of the intermediary markets to now run multiple instances of the "ledger" and agree that part of the larger "transaction" using fault tolerance.

Architecture

While this architecture is slightly different than public blockchains where there is no concept of permissions, except via smart contracts this permissioning structure provides a larger power to end-users.

Imaging complex commodity shipment marketplaces, which setup a supply chain operates between different markets, wherein each market can function with a different design (e.g., auction, direct procurement, contract-based procurement, etc.). A permissioned blockchain that operates at the level of each market along the full chain is an efficiency improver to all involved.
