Medieval tournaments were an important form of entertainment and exercise in the medieval era. Nobility and commoners alike enjoyed the amazing spectacle of Chivalrous knights fighting for glory and honor.
The medieval tournaments are believed to have originated in France during the 11th and early 12th century. Tournaments first became common in England during the reign of Richard 1 (1189-99) who wanted to increase the skill of his knight better than the level of the French. Richard 1 also wanted to permit tournaments for income.
Tournaments, also called tourney were usually hosted by wealthy nobles in trying to gain favor and popularity among the people. The wealthy nobles would also provide the winning competitor with a prize. They arranged battles and competitions, inviting men from among the strongest members of the community. For an example during king John and Henry III’s reign tournaments organized by earls and were specifically held near castles which meant near towns and markets (Duches Felinah 1).
