WOLFWALKERS (2020)
El mundo de las películas animadas es un mundo maravilloso. Su mercado es feroz y bastante amplio, comúnmente coronado con los nombres de las más grandes casas creadoras. Se siente como aire fresco cuando una casa creadora más pequeña, se saca de la manga alguna obra maestra para dejarnos boquiabiertos. Este es el caso de Cartoon Saloon, un estudio de animación irlandés que ha ido haciéndose un nombre en los últimos años. Tras títulos tan aclamados tanto por la crítica como por el público como lo son La Canción del Mar o la nominada al Oscar: El Pan de la Guerra, el estudio irlandés estrena su última historia fantástica: Wolfwalkers.
The world of animated movies is wonderful. Its market is fierce and pretty wide, the studios with big names are commonly crowned. It feels like fresh air when a tinier studio studio shows us a masterpiece to leave us all speechless. This is what happens with Cartoon Saloon, an irish animation studio that has been getting more popular and respected through the last few years. After such critically and popularly acclaimed films as Song of the Sea or the Oscar-nominated The Breadwinner, the irish studio premieres its last fantastic story: Wolfwalkers.

Wolfwalkers es una película dirigida por Tomm Moore y Ross Stewart, distribuida por Apple, la cual fue estrenada en septiembre del 2020 en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto, posteriormente teniendo un estreno limitado en Reino Unido y finalmente entre Noviembre y Diciembre en Irlanda y Estados Unidos. Wolfwalkers representa una importante adición al repertorio de Cartoon Saloon, siendo esta una de sus películas más trabajadas y detalladas. Tras su estreno, Wolfwalkers fue nominada al Globo de Oro para Mejor Película Animada. Cuenta actores y actrices como Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Sean Bean y Simon McBurney llevando los papeles protagonistas.
*Wolfwalkers is a movie directed by Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart, distributed by Apple, which was premiered in September of 2020 in TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), therefore it had a limited premiere in the United Kingdom and finally, between November and December, in Ireland and the USA. Wolfwalkers represents an important adition to the Cartoon Saloon's repertory, this one being one of their most detailed and well worked films. After its premiere, Wolfwalkers was nominated to the Golden Globe for the Best Animated Movie. The film has actors and actresses such as Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Sean Bean y Simon McBurney in the leading roles.
LA HISTORIA
THE PLOT
La historia de esta película gira en torno a Robyn, una chica rebelde que vive en Kilkenny, Irlanda, a mediados del siglo XVII. Su vida consiste en imitar a su padre a escondidas, un cazador de lobos que trabaja bajo la orden del Lord Protector, el regente del pueblo, quien quiere talar por completo el bosque aledaño y así ahuyentar por completo a los lobos. Negándose a aceptar los roles que le quieren imponer, Robyn, junto a su mascota, Merlyn, decide escabullirse del pueblo cuando su padre se va de caza, con intención de ayudarle y demostrarle que es capaz de ser una cazadora.
The story circles around Robyn, a rebel girl who lives in Kilkenny, Ireland, in the midst of the 17th century. Her life consists in secretly mimicking her father, a wolf hunter who works under command of the Lord Protector, the regent of the town, who wants to completely cut down the neighboring forest to get rid of the wolves. Rejecting the roles that are getting imposed to her, Robyn decides to flee out of town and chase her father with her bird pet, Merlyn. Trying to help him and to demonstrate that she is capable of being a hunter.
En medio de su aventura, se da cuenta de que no está preparada para hacerle frente a los lobos y tras un desafortunado accidente, hiere a su mascota con una flecha. De repente, una jauría de lobos liderada por una extraña niña se lleva a Merlyn. Robyn irá tras ella para recuperar a su mascota y se dará cuenta que aquella niña es una legendaria criatura conocida como Wolfwalker, una criatura capaz de transformarse en lobo al dormir y con capacidades curativas. Tras conocer a Mebh (la niña wolfwalker), se da cuenta de que los lobos no son criaturas malévolas. Mebh le contará a Robyn que su madre está desaparecida. Robyn prometerá ayudarla e intentar conseguir a la madre de Mebh antes de que el Lord Protector destruya el bosque.
In the midst of her adventure, she realizes that she's not ready to face the wolves and after an unfortunate accident, she hurts her bird with an arrow. Suddenly, a pack of wolves commanded by an strange girl takes Merlyn away. Robyn will go after her to get her pet back and will realize that the strange girl is a legendary creature known as Wolfwalker, a creature capable of transforming in to a wolf and who has healing powers. After meeting Mebh (the wolfwalker girl), she finds out that the wolves are not evil creatures and Mebh tells her that her mother is missing. Robyn will make the promise of helping Mebh and trying to find her mother before the Lord Protector destroys the forest.

AESTHETICS
El apartado visual de Wolfwalkers es, sin dudas, su mayor fuerte. Con los directores y María Pareja llevando el departamento y dirección de arte, Wolfwalkers es un deleite visual imparable donde cada escenario es más bello que el anterior, haciendo que la película funcione también como una hermosa galería de paisajes. El estilo de dibujo es sumamente colorido y detallado, puedes detenerte en casi cualquier momento de la película y encontrar un sinfín de detalles en el fondo de cada escenario. Además, el uso de los ángulos y dimensiones es sumamente inteligente y creativo, haciendo que no solo sea un espectáculo visual de manera tradicional, sino brindando nuevas perspectivas que dan aún más cabida al increíble estilo estético de esta película. The visuals of Wolfwalkers are, without a doubt, its greatest strenght. With the directors and María Pareja leading the art direction and art department, Wolfwalkers gets to be an unstoppable visual delight where each frame is more beautiful than the last, making the film function as a gorgeous landscape gallery. The drawing style is extremely colorful and detailed, you can stop in almost any point of the film and find endless details in all the backgrounds. In addition, the use of angles and dimensions is very clever and creative, making it not only a visual spectacle in the traditional way, but also giving new perspectives that give even more room for the incredible aesthetic style of this film. SOUNDTRACK
La música de esta película está llevada de la mano de Bruno Coulais, un compositor francés conocido por sus bandas sonoras de películas, entre las que está la popular Coraline. La música de Bruno es muy delicada y el sonido es muy fiel a la cultura irlandesa, se pueden escuchar piezas con instrumentos típicos de dicha cultura y trabajos de percusión fuertes y emocionantes. La banda sonora cuenta también con el trabajo de la banda de música folclórica irlandesa Kíla, quienes tuvieron gran parte en darle ese sabor local a la banda sonora. También cuenta con la participación de la cantante noruega AURORA, quien hace una nueva versión de su popular canción "Running With The Wolves" para esta película.
The music for this film is by the hand of Bruno Coulais, a french composer well known for his movie soundtracks, among which is the popular Coraline. Bruno's music is very delicate and its sound is very faithful to the irish culture, you can hear songs with typical instruments from that culture and an exciting percussion work. The soundtrack also features the work of the irish folk band Kíla, who played a big part in giving the soundtrack that irish flavor. The soundtrack also has the participation of the norwegian singer AURORA, who created a new version of her popular song "Running With The Wolves" for this film.

Aunque tengo opiniones fuertes respecto a la idea de ver a las películas animadas como algo para niños, no puedo evitar imaginarme escenarios en los que los niños de estas generaciones vean este tipo de películas y sean influenciados por ellas, así como nosotros en algún momento fuimos influenciados por las películas de nuestra infancia. Por ello, es refrescante y esperanzador ver que obras tan maravillosas como Wolfwalkers puedan caer a las manos de los niños de hoy. Sin embargo, apartándonos de esa idea, Wolfwalkers es una película maravillosa independientemente de la edad del espectador. Varios amigos estuvieron recomendándola constantemente durante varios días y hace poco, finalmente decidí ponerme a verla y estuve muy feliz de por fin haberle hecho caso a mis amigos.
While I have strong opinions regarding the idea of seeing animated films as a "children thing", I can't but imagine some scenarios where children of these generations are watching these type of films and being influenced by them, as we sometime in the past grew up and were influenced by the films of our childhood. So, it is refreshing and hopeful to see that such wonderful works as Wolfwalkers can fall into the hands of today's generation of children. However, moving away from that idea, Wolfwalkers is a wonderful film regardless of the age of the viewer. Several friends were constantly recommending it for a bunch of days, and recently, I finally decided to watch it and became very glad to have finally listened to my friends.
Wolfwalkers está llena de encanto por donde la tomes. Sus personajes son sumamente entrañables y carismáticos. Mebh y Robyn tienen muchísima química y el solo verlas jugar es cálido y alegre. Ver evolucionar esta relación y también a Robyn adaptarse a este nuevo mundo fantástico se siente como si la acompañaras en su aventura.
Wolfwalkers is charming, no matter how you look it. The characters are very endearing and charismatic. Mebh and Robyn have great chemistry and only watching them play around gives a warm and happy feeling. Watching their relationship evolve and also Robyn adapt to this fantastic world, feels like you're with her in her adventure.
La empatía que pueden generar los conflictos de la protagonista es probablemente uno de los puntos más fuertes de la historia de esta película, las constantes frustraciones de Robyn en sus dificultades para ayudar a Mebh en la búsqueda de su madre son situaciones planteadas de una manera que te tendrán en la misma frustración, intentando buscar una solución.
Empathy is a big thing in this film. The protagonist conflicts and frustrations are something you can easily connect to, her difficulties in the duty of helping Mebh in her search for her mother have situations that will get you to be as frustrated as Robyn, trying to find a way out of everything.
Acorde a lo anterior, el Lord Protector funciona como un excelente villano al ser el causante del conflicto principal de la historia. Su personalidad es fría y directa, no se muestra a sí mismo como un personaje cruel, sino como un personaje totalmente decidido a cumplir su misión, sea esta inmoral o no. Por ello, considero que es un gran villano al ser un personaje con motivaciones humanas, pero sin la necesidad de romantizar o hacer que sintamos lástima por él.
According to this, the Lord Protector functions as a great villain as he is the cause of the main conflict of the story. His personality is cold and straight, doesn't shows himself as a particularly cruel charactor, but as a very decided man who will do anything to accomplish his mission, even if it is immoral or not. Therefore, I consider he is a great villain as he is a character with very human motivations, but without to romanticize him or making us feel sorry for him.
Wolfwalkers también tiene un trasfondo y mensaje ecologista que es mostrado de manera sutil en el transcurso de la película. La tala de árboles está constantemente presente en esta historia y evidentemente, esta está de parte de la naturaleza, pues su retrato de la misma es sumamente hermoso y habla indirectamente al espectador, con un mensaje que no solo dirige al respeto a la naturaleza en general, sino también al cuidado de la fauna.
Wolfwalkers also has an enviromentalist undertone and message that is subtly shown throughout the film. Cutting trees down is something constantly present in this story and evidently, the story is in nature's side, as its portrayal of nature is extremely and speaks indirectly to the viewer, with a message that not only reflects to respect nature in general, but also to care for wildlife.
VEREDICTO
VERDICT
Creo que puedo resumir mi opinión final sobre esta película con decir que me tuvo en lágrimas en varias ocasiones y por muchos motivos. Es una de las poquísimas películas cuyo apartado visual me resultó tan hermoso que me llevó a tal nivel de conmoción. Por ende, ya solo por su apartado visual, considero que vale totalmente la pena. Pero la estética no es para nada su único atributo, Wolfwalkers es una historia muy optimista e inspiradora, es un cuento de hadas espectacular y que funciona de maravilla. Incluso cuando se podría decir que varias partes de su historia son muy cliché, la ejecución que esta película les da, es encantadora y no decepciona. Wolfwalkers es definitivamente una de las mejores películas animadas que se han estrenado en años recientes y una experiencia mágica y maravillosa para todas las edades. No voy a poder cansarme de recomendarla.
I think I can resume my final opinion of this film by saying that it had me in tears on several occasions and for many different reasons. It is one of the very few films whose visuals were so beautiful to me that it took me to such a level of awe. Therefore, just for its visuals alone, I consider it is totally worth it. But the aesthetics are by no means its only attribute, Wolfwalkers is a very optimistic and inspiring story, it is an spectacular fairy tale that works wonderfully. Even when you could say that several parts of its story are very cliché, the execution that this film gives them is charming and doesn't disappoint. Wolfwalkers is definitely one of the best animated films released in recent years and a magical and wonderful experience for all ages. I'll never get tired of recommending it.
