Leaf-cutter Ants and Harvests: Day-to-Day Life in My Garden Plot / Entre Bachacos y Cosechas: El Día a Día en Mi Conuco

[ESP/ENG]

Hello to the entire HiveGarden community! Sending good vibes from this green corner where life never stands still. Today, I want to share a summary of how things have been going in the garden plot lately. Working the land always teaches us that nothing is static: there are days of pure joy when we see our food sprouting, and others of deep learning when nature puts us to the test.

The Battle Against Leaf-cutter Ants / La batalla contra los bachacos

I’ll start by sharing this week's bitter pill. Leaf-cutter ants—or bachacos, as we call them around here—descended upon one of our cassava plants overnight, stripping it almost bare in a matter of hours. Seeing weeks of effort reduced to naked stalks leaves you feeling a bit helpless, but in the garden plot, there’s no time to dwell on regrets. It reminds us of the importance of constant vigilance, reinforcing physical barriers, and preparing organic repellents—like those made from chili peppers or ash—to halt their advance before they reach other plants.

🍅 Tomatoes and First Eggplant Flowers / Tomates y primeras flores de berenjena

But it’s not all battles; the earth always knows how to reward hard work. If we walk a little further toward the center of the garden, morale instantly lifts. The tomato plants are gaining incredible strength, and the first green fruits can already be seen forming amidst the foliage. It is a great pleasure to check the stems, adjust the stakes, and know that we will soon have a fresh harvest for the table.

Right next to them, a young eggplant plant gave us the pleasant surprise of its first flowers. Those purple hues confirm that the soil is responding well and that our organic fertilizing efforts have paid off.

We also like to experiment and propagate what we have in this space. Lately, I’ve been testing layering and cuttings to propagate stevia. They are coming along well, gradually taking root in their temporary containers. The goal is to secure our own supply of aromatic and medicinal plants without relying on purchasing seedlings from outside sources.

On the other hand, the dwarf topocho (a type of plantain) remains one of the kings of the garden plot, boasting a dense bunch that promises plenty of fried slices and plantain sticks. It is deeply satisfying to watch these plantains plump up day by day thanks to daily care.

🌺 Wild Diversity: Nightshade and Purslane / Diversidad silvestre: Yerba mora y verdolaga

To wrap up the tour, the wild diversity of the garden is always on display. On one side, we have the black nightshade (yerba mora) laden with small, dark fruits; on the other, the lovely flowers of the purslane (verdolaga) bring life and color to the edges and pathways.

This is how this little patch of land stays alive: facing down pests, planting with faith, and reaping the rewards of daily labor. If you’ve made it this far, I’d appreciate your comments.

And what has worked for you to keep leaf-cutter ants (bachacos) away?
