Holla readers and fellow prestigious hive bloggers, it is another edition of weekly featured content titled "impromptu test" in hive learners community
In most academic institution in Nigeria, test is considered an evaluation of student academic capabilities prior to conducting of exam, it is used in most schools as CA (continuous assessment). it is a common culture in most schools but not all are conducted for the right reasons.
Studying in Nigeria, as a student there are somethings we experience which we can't possibly explain since we don't really understand the reasons behind it, A cousin of mine in Germany, currently in her second year of Ausbildung. A program set aside for mostly health care practitioners in Germany. most times during our conversations, she would inform me about the fact that she has to prepare for her test, especially on Fridays.
It got me wondering, wow that sounds good because the last time I experienced a scheduled test was secondary school but it all changed the moment I got admission into higher institution. well if I'm being sincere, I guess it was still a little bit fair during my national diploma at Gateway Polytechnic Ogun State. most times our test were scheduled for a particular week or more so that we can prepare for it.
But everything got worse during my Higher national diploma at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Ogun State. on getting there I still expected things to be the same like it was during my National diploma but it came as a shock to me that, the institution ways of conducting test is far more different from where I'm coming from.
In moshood abiola Polytechnic precisely test is used as a weapon by lecturer to coarse or compel and subdue student into doing the lecturer will. for example on days when lecturer come into class and realise the attendance of student is low, the next thing he or she does is to conduct an impromptu test for the students, to be used as CA or in a case where by after holiday period student refuse to resume according to the time given my the management, the lecturer will use test to force student back into resumption. Scheduled test is not a practice cherished in my school.
There was this particular lecturer named Dr. Adeosun, to a degree I consider this man my personal nemesis, like he is literally after my academic career. I have mentioned him in a post before, he is a popular lecturer among broadcast student in moshood abiola Polytechnic, To make things worst he takes more than two 3 unit course and he is also the class adviser for HND 1 students.
I had a lot of passion for broadcast due to my experience in different broadcast entities, so I was asked to choose between broadcast and print, I didn't hesitate to choose broadcast, not knowing I was making the worst decision of my life. though every lecturer engage in impromptu test in moshood abiola Polytechnic but Dr adeosun techniques is more cruel than the rest.
There was this particular time when Dr adeosun mistook our free period for a lecture time, on getting to class he only met few students roaming as usual, the man suddenly became furious. even the class rep was not in class, suddenly he told the students in class to inform the rest of the student that he will be conducting test in the next 20 minutes.
The news was broadcasted on our WhatsApp group, I got the information and I was terrified knowing the kind man I was dealing with, he is always in search of possible ways to fail student, especially for student such as me, who has led protest against him sometime ago. knowing it was a free period, I wasn't prepared for lecture at all, I didn't remember to take my bath, I ran like flash, on getting to the bus stop there was no vehicle or bike, I had to treek down to school.
For the first time, I was wearing a black hoody and short with slippers to lecture, on getting to class I saw the man smiling with some lecturers as students pour in like hunted cockroaches. I got into class, after about fifteen minutes the man got in, a student called is attention to explain about the free period, he was so furious, chased the girl out and promise a reduction mark for being rude to a lecturer. I'm not a coward, I was about to do the same thing she did but all of a sudden I was glad I didn't speak up🤦🤦.
The man realised twenty minutes had passed, he ask the class rep to close all the entrance, personally he scattered all of us across the hall, it was as if we were about to sit for exam, he gave us about 5 questions for test, it was unexpected.
since it was broadcast, it has always been my favourite so I had no problem with the questions but would have helped more if I had prepare for the test, the test went on for about 40 minutes, the hall was so quiet, felt like a ghost town.
LESSONS
Despite the unpleasantness of the test I learnt few things that day.
1) Always be prepared: I have always been conversant with the course outline so nothing was new to me, that assisted me in gaining the upper hand in the impromptu test and I didn't end up lamenting at the end of the test.
2) Beware of the devil: Sometimes in life you just have to tolerate some event even if you don't agree with it, it is not every time you will speak up. the girl ended up having carry over in that course despite all her effort in the exam, we suspected the Lecturer was the cause of the carry over but no one wanted to have any confrontation with him, from experience it is never pleasant and an unending battle to face Dr adeosun.
3) Always stay close to school: If I was not close to school, there is no way I would have gotten to the school on time. so it is advisable to have your accommodation close to school in case similar unexpected events occur.
LIFE IS FULL OF SURPRISES BE PREPARED, UNEXPECTED IS NOT AN EXCUSE.
