Once upon a time, our ancestors lived and survived based on the value they contributed to the world. Some of them were farmers, some artists, some goldsmiths, some blacksmiths, and so on.

Their lives were lived without mounting expectations on people or the government. As long as they are strong and healthy, they are sure to be able to sort their bills and feed their families.

Fast forward to our day, things have changed, we embraced education, we became wise, intelligent, and smart, but we became dependent on the government.

Most people today think that because they went to school, the government must provide jobs for them, and because of this, the rate of unemployment is ever on the increase.

A young man of 25 in some parts of the world today is still depending on his parents for his basic needs, but in the days of our ancestors, it was not so.

The reason is that our ancestors believed in creating value with their hands and reaping the fruits, while our generation believes in a soft life and white-collar jobs.

It's so sad that we neglected the place of handwork and we are suffering dearly for it. Most parents would rather send their children to school than to enroll them in learning a skill.

Both are good, but to strike a balance, a child is supposed to acquire a lucrative skill and be educated.

Our world today doesn't care about anyone; anyone who doesn't know how to create opportunities for themselves is left to suffer.

Handwork or skills are lucrative, but they are strenuous. Some skills demand a lot of energy, but the truth remains that anyone with skill doesn't go hungry, except he or she is the lazy type.

I was discussing with my friend some time ago, and I was telling him how bad I feel that I do not have any professional skills.

Sadly, he also complains about the same thing. These days, those who have skills or handwork are the ones enjoying life; no matter what happens, people will demand their services, and after rendering, they will definitely get paid.

My kind advice to parents is that as a child is going to school, at least from primary five, the child should start learning a skill.

This would help the child master the craft before he reaches the age of understanding, and with good financial knowledge, money won't be a problem when the child grows up.

Even if the government didn't give such a person a job, he or she already has something to fall back on.

We complain about poverty and joblessness; sometimes, this is where the problem lies.

One beautiful thing with skill is that, whether one is educated or not, with a good knowledge of one's skill, one can become financially free.

But I always advise for a balance, get a skill and get an education, it will do us good.
