The truth is, I like the guy a lot. I have watched a few of his movies, and he always delivers. One of my favorites of his movies was "Deadpool." I plan to write a review of it very soon.
Mayday is an action, comedy, and adventure movie released in 2026. It was directed by John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein, starring Ryan Reynolds, Kenneth Branagh, and Marcin Dorocinski. The duration of the movie is 1 hour 50 minutes.
During the Cold War, 1987. Lieutenant Troy (Ryan Reynolds), also known as the Assassin, a skillful U.S. Navy fighter pilot, was sent on a secret mission over the Soviet region.
Unfortunately, the mission went south; their jet was shot down by the enemy. Troy miraculously survived and landed in the Russian wilderness, where he met a former Russian KGB agent, Nikolai Ustinov, played by Kenneth Branagh.
Being a former Russian KGB agent, Nikolai was supposed to hand him over to the government for prosecution, but instead, he took him in and cared for him when he realized that Troy was an American. Nikolai is a secret admirer of American culture influenced by the movie Top Gun.
They became friends after Nikolai saved Troy’s life many times, proving himself to be a good man, which completely won Troy's heart.
But that was not it; Troy still has to leave the country back to his nation before the Russian army lays its hands on him.
The movie is about survival, war, friendship, comedy, and a little about family.
The cinematography was good; I love the background of the movie and the soundtrack; they fit each of the scenes.
Ryan Reynolds did a good job with the sarcastic comedy. It's his thing on a normal day, and trust me, they really fit this movie.
Overall, my favorite actor in the movie is Nikolai Ustinov. I was not expecting much from him at the beginning, but the display of his skill and wisdom in fighting really carried me away.
He is also quite good at comedy. One of the scenes that blew my mind was when he said that before he decides whether to ride into the danger zone with Troy or not, he has to finish his drink, only for him to begin sipping the drink he was supposed to finish up at once.
This movie talks about a lot of things: how one can receive help from a total stranger. It also talks about what true friendship means, for instance, when Troy was ready to let his plan crash into the sea if his friend Nikolai wasn't given permanent asylum status. I was really moved by the scene.
Well, I expected to see more of a military fight, but it ended up being a small battle between Alexander Volkov (Marcin Dorocinski) and Troy and his friend, Nikolai.
Also, the emotional scenes that I expected so much disappointed me. I expected the scene when Nikolai and his daughter, Anna Ustinov (Maria Bakalova), reconciled to be touching, but it was rushed.
It was even more annoying when she left her dad, who was trying to carry her out of the country to The US for safety, and nothing was said of her again apart from the note she left.
The ending was a happy one; Troy got back home, and he was able to also secure permanent asylum for his friend Nikolai, whose dream has always been to be a U.S. citizen.
You will enjoy this movie a lot if you love action and comedy movies, but don't put so many expectations on intense military battles.
