I was discussing with my mother about education during their time and she told me that before one goes to primary school, your hands need to cross through your head and touch your ear on the other side.
If you don't meet that requirement, forget it. I don't know why that rule was brought, probably because they feel if your hand can't touch your ear, you are still a child and as such you won't be able to cope in school because maybe they felt children aren't smart enough then.
But today, you can find children who are just ages one, two, and three already in school. Some of them are even smarter than those who are older than they are.
Sometimes, when I see how smart children of this age are, I marvel. I don't know if it's just me who noticed this or not, but when was the last time you saw children riding tires? Children are no longer children, they don't even play. They are older than their ages.
While I was growing up, we played our lives out, wore torn dresses without minding anyone, or even felt ashamed for it. Our parents could lie to us to prevent us from doing certain things and we will not out of fear and ignorance.
Our parents will collect our money and exchange it with lesser ones and we won't bother because of the quantity but these days, you can't do that with some kids.
I learned how to read while I was ten years old, in fact, I kept struggling until I got to junior secondary school 2. But my sister's daughter who is just in primary one can read and write. There is something special about the children of this generation.
I believe they have a future full of tasks that are greater than ours that's why they are special too.
My Elder sister who resides in Plateau State visited us last month, she came along with her three-year-old boy.
He got so used to me that he followed me everywhere I went, he insisted he was going to sleep in my room and I consented.
While we were sleeping that night, he woke up and started crying. When I asked him what the problem was, he said he wanted to pee.
I quickly took him to the restroom and he peed. I was just so surprised, in the morning I told his mom about it and she said, "he doesn't pee in bed. He wakes her up each time he wants to pee unless he is not feeling fine."
Where could he have learned that peeing on the bed isn't good at his age? His elder brother still pees on the bed to date. In fact, I knew I peed on the bed until I was in the primary section. My mom used to beat me every morning for that.
Honestly, things are changing, and our kids are already coming prepared for the great change that is coming ahead.
My advice to parents is when you notice your children are unique, don't just be proud and neglect the child, concentrate on the child and ensure you build them. I assure you, greater tasks are awaiting these kids, help them discover who they are so that they don't get stranded when the time comes or use those gifts for the wrong purposes.
