Later on, it was the military, and the Nigerian Navy to be precise. I applied several times and went for examinations and screenings but was not enlisted.
I was ready to serve my country: to defend our maritime resources, protect lives and property, and I was not even concerned about the humiliation and struggles that come with starting as a non-commissioned officer.
And the craziest part is that I was not loving the job because of the prestige attached to it and the uniforms; I just wanted to serve, and I don't know how I got the conviction that my calling lies in the field.
Unfortunately, my passion was dashed to pieces after the last screening I went for. You know what happens when you are certain about getting something and then suddenly the result came out, and you were not selected? That was the situation.
In Nigeria, if you don't have any godfather to stand for you when seeking a job, your chances of getting that job are less, even if you have all the qualifications.
To be frank, when the final list came out, I was hurt; I questioned God, but I had to apologize because I don't really know what his plans are.
My passion for the military eroded until I found myself not wanting it the way I used to.
Currently, if you ask me what career I would like to go for, I will tell you business. I just want to have my own enterprise, be in charge, and also provide opportunities for others.
With business, I can have as much time as I want for myself and my family and not have to be around only when I am given a pass.
With business, no one decides what I will earn and how I earn it; everything is up to me. My winners or losers are solely my responsibility, and I love that kind of liberty.
You may want to ask: what of the Navy passion, will you still go if you find the opportunity?
Seriously, I can not tell for now; I can't even go as a non-commissioned officer anymore; I have exceeded the age limit.
However, if it's God's plan for me, eventually, I will go as a commissioned officer through Short Service. But for now, I prefer to settle down with business.
