On Sunday afternoon I had a conversation with my elder sister over the phone (we try to have one at least every week). We basically just talk about everything and nothing as you'd expect and the focus of the discourse always seems to take shape on its own.
We drifted to some family relationships that have gone sour and that ended up being the basis of our discussion throughout the remainder of the conversation. There have been quite a few that we have had disagreements that have led to a deterioration of our relationships but perhaps none quite as significant as the fallout with our Cousins (children of my Mom's younger sister).
It started out as a disagreement between my mom and her sister some three years ago, over an issue that happened two decades ago and they were apparently okay with at the time. When the conflict became more serious, I expected common sense to prevail but instead we had majority of us children from both sides deciding to align with our mothers.
I find it funny because our relationship as Cousins has been altered as a result. A once strong family ties has simply withered into disinterest. I tried to reason with my sister on a possible path to reconciliation but it seems everyone is just more comfortable moving on. It is sad but I guess I will eventually accept it for what it is.
