Two weeks after, Nkechi’s mother is still on her sick bed, Nkechi had spent all the money she had been saving for her WASSCE examination.
Mama sickness is already affecting her education due to the fact that she could not concentrate in her classes anymore
and she had been staying away from school since they finished their test at school. Nkechi got tired; she started crying
as she buried her head on her hands.
“ko ko ko” someone knocked at the door. Nkechi quickly used her hand s to wipe off the tears on her face. It was Gift,
Gift had been the only one who knew about mama’s condition, she had given Nkechi part of her saving to buy drugs for
her but all to no avail. The tears on Nkechi’s face was obvious, “Don’t worry, mama will be alright” Gift petted Nkechi.
She busted into tears as Gift petted her. “Why always me, papa died 5 years ago leaving me and mama alone, on my
birthday again, mama became sick, I think I am cursed, I think I am the one behind the misfortune of my parent” Nkechi
blamed herself as she wept bitterly, “Don’t blame yourself for your parent misfortune, all is well” Gift comforted her.
“But why can’t you tell Emeka about this, because I know he will help you out” Gift said. Immediately, Nkechi
remembered the golden wrist watch Emeka presented to her on her birthday. She quickly went to the place where she
hid the watch and brought it out. “Am going to sell this watch to get mama some drugs” she said as they went out and headed for the gold merchant house.
Nkechi got home to give her mother the drug she bought “mama, wake up and take your drug” she said, but no
response, she laid her hand on mama’s chest but mama was no more breathing, she has given up the ghost. Nkechi
shouted for help, all the people in her community came to her rescue, they petted her but she didn’t listen, she started
rolling on the floor, she cried unendingly
