Every Saturday, Nkechi goes to “Mama G food canteen” to help her in doing some works as she paid her little amount of money, she uses this to help her mother and also to buy some books at school. Nkechi’s mother earn little for the fish she sells in the nearby market.
One day, Nkechi was on her way to Mama G’s shop then she met Emeka on her way. They greeted eachother
“Where are you going to?” Emeka asked
“Hmmmmm…..I am going toooooooo” she stammered
“To where” he asked again
“To visit Gift” she lied
“Okay I am going to Ike’s house (Emeka’s best friend) so far, they live in the same street, let’s go together” Emeka insisted
“Hmmmm.... I have something better to do before going to Gift’s house, we will see in the evening, bye” she said as she walked away
Emeka became suspicious of her behavior “this girl is after something, and I must see that” he soliloquized as he tip-toed and traced her until he sees her washing plate in Mama G’s shop. Nkechi has been hiding this secret long time ago from Emeka, but it seems as if her tube of secret has been punctured and already leaking. Emeka is the only son of the richest man in the village. He loves Nkechi so much but was afraid to make the confession. They were nothing but common friends, who read together.
In the evening, “the elite group” met at Ike’s house to read. Emeka was just staring at her, she noticed but didn’t know why. They read for 2 hours, then Nkechi broke the silence “I am going home, mama would have gotten back from the market and moreover it’s getting dark” they prayed and disengaged to their various houses.
