Great man who are significant and that have ever been, have diligence as the common denominator, that have lifted them to a greater height in life. Diligence is still the mother of good fortune in life.

Wulian Pernn says

"patience and diligence like faith remove mountains“. No matter the height of the mountain of poverty, If a man can apply diligence to it the mountain will ultimately be removed"

We are going to learn about some great men who wrote their names in gold through diligence. The present generation and the coming ones would continue to get the blessings of diligence through them. They turned poverty to prosperity through diligence. Some of them still have their achievements as blessings to the generations that would come alter them. Their lives demonstrate that a poor background is nothing, but an opportunity to be made great through diligence. Their lives demonstrate that no poverty can overtake diligence. The few would be mentioned for the sake of brevity.

Charles Dicken (1812-1870)

images (1).jpg
Charles Dicken was born into abject poverty. His father, Dicken, was a great debtor. And being insolvent, he was sentenced to a prison because the debt was so huge. The condition was so terrible that all his friends deserted him.

Charles Dicken was born into this horrible situation. He had avery poor and dry background.

Charles Dickens had other four brothers, who the mother found difficult to take care of. The mother sent the four children, together with Charles, to be living with the father in the prison, so as to get their daily food. She too was poor to take care of the poor Charles and his four other brothers. She did this so that the children would not die of hunger. This harsh condition forced them to sell off their household furniture to survive.

Charles himself was disturbed with the condition he was born into. He could not spend more than four years of schooling. He sold some of his books to keep his soul and body together, when out of school.

Later, he got job with a bottling company where he was helping them to paste labels on bottles, earning a meagre salary.

He managed to rent a room where he attended 'self-made university'.

Charles changed his poor world by studying hard under the roof. He started to acquire wisdom upon wisdom through books he read.

Charles started to write for publication. Virtually all publication firms he wrote for turned him down for publication. Charles did not take no for an answer. By persevering in diligence, later, life started to take a better shape for Charles when he was inspired to write a small book titled: 'Christmas Carol'. The book was a fast selling one that above one thousand copies were sold the first day it came out of press. Some weeks later, the sale of the book had risen to about twenty thousand copies -very incredible.

Later on, the book was highly demanded world-wide that he translated the book into many languages.

J. P. Morgan, amulti-millionaire bought the manuscript with a huge amount of money. Charles then became a man in stupendous wealth. Charles did not stop being diligent. He went further to write as many as seventeen best-selling novels.

Diligence favoured him that he became great to the extent that he turned to be a celebrity that men were taking tickets to listen to. There was an instance when the tickets got exhausted, immediately. his 'hungry' fans went on riot.

Before Charles died, he became a man of stupendous affluence and achievement that his manuscript brought him three pounds (€3.00) a word - the highest ever paid to an author since the world began.

Charles Dicken was a prolific author of numerous best-selling books that are considered classics.

images (2).jpg
He, most of his life, worked eighteen hours everyday. Until he was sixty-four, he only took catnaps occasional breaks to eat on the most work day. At the age of seventy-five, he had cut his work day down to sixteen hours-work in two-eight hours shift. He rarely slept for more than three or four hours a day: usually right in his laboratory work was the elixir of his life.

People wrote this about him. "He led no armies led into battle, he conquered no countries and he enslaved no people .... Nonetheless, he exerted a degree of power, the magnitude of which no warrior ever dreamed. His name still commands a respect as. sweeping in scope and as world-wide as that of any other mortal, a devotion rooted deep in human gratitude and untainted by the basis that is often associated with race, colour, politics and religion".
