The soft gleam of the evening sun
The gentle shade of a branched palm
The tender swipe of the breeze past your face as you savour its scent
The intoxicating sound of well-composed music
Smiles and giggles with friends
A meal with family
I hope you learn to appreciate these little joys
I hope they drown your sorrows
I hope they make you smile
-Femmy Emmanuel
I went on a picnic at Agodi Gardens, Ibadan recently. Precisely, on the 13th of this month, the day before Valentine's. It was just 4 of us. 2 boys, 2 girls. It was evening, the sun was already making its way past the horizon and out of sight. The cool evening breeze seemed like the next best thing since food. Yeah, food. I love good food.
Anyways, the scenery felt familiar. I had felt this before. And this poem of mine came to mind.
I wrote this in February 2020, just before the COVID break, while on an excursion to the Lufasi nature park in Lagos. I belong to a classical choir group in UCH, Sinfonia. And it is customary for the singers to go for a trip after every concert, which holds annually.
I finished this poem on the journey back.
It is my wish and prayer for everyone that we be all learn to identify and appreciate those little things that provide us joy.
