Beyond the exhaled breath escaping my lips on crisp morning dawns
Beside the creeping rays of sun that rose above the mountain peaks
Below the smashing waves that pound and break, tumbling to the sandy beach
With every slow step in rhythm we took as if dancing to a silent song
Without any hesitance, only candor, where we laughed together on what felt like the edge of the world
There is no shuddering jolt or gripping fear within my skin
Even when the lightning bolts hit the ground all around us
The booming cacophony became a melody when you whispered to me
We hiked the steepest summits, we bathed in the lake fed by the underground spring
We made love sheltered by the canopy of the Cypress as the wind playfully caressed our skin
You wrapped us up in the picnic blanket, disheveled and creased but warm and welcoming
And on the road on our way home, my feet up on the dash
I closed my eyes as the songs seeped into my soul
As you placed your hand in mine
Those memories etched on my heart, I still drive those roads
As if it could somehow bring you back...
Inconsequential, as it may seem
As if the stars could pass along my messages, or the moon could shine on that meadow again, as it did before
But I still hike those pathways and when I reach the summit I still call your name
And sometimes
Just sometimes ...
When the wind blows west and the raindrops fall, tumultuously beating down on the earth, when the creek swells and river rages and the dam walls burst
Faced away from the icy, bitter wind that gnashes at my clothing as if to tear it apart...The storms quell the sound of the ever-quickening pulse in my ears
I face the raging torrent, the increasing blizzard swirling all around
Is that you calling me? Fervor and urgency in your tone
But the winter has me captive and I'm so very COLD
And I feel your fingers slip around my wrists and wrestle me free
Your voice summoning me to come back home
As I gasp for breath, for life, for freedom, for relief
