Indulge in a delightful and elegant dessert with this Ladyfinger Trifle. It brings together layers of rich, creamy pastry cream and soft ladyfingers infused with a hint of coffee, all topped with a dusting of cocoa powder. Perfect for a special occasion!

Ingredients

For the Pastry Cream:
🥛 2 cups of whole milk
🍚 1/2 cup of sugar
🥚 4 egg yolks
🌽 1/4 cup of cornstarch
🍦 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
🧈 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter

For the Trifle:
☕️ 2 tablespoons of instant coffee
🍪 Ladyfingers (as needed to fit your serving cups)
🍫 Cocoa powder (for dusting)
🍦 Whipped cream (optional, for topping)

Instructions

1- Prepare the Pastry Cream:

  • Pour 2 cups of milk and half of the sugar into a saucepan. Heat over medium until it begins to simmer.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine egg yolks, the remaining sugar, and cornstarch. Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually pour half of the simmered milk into the egg mixture, whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
  • Transfer the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over medium heat, continuing to stir, until it thickens.
  • Once thickened, remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla extract, mixing until the butter is fully melted.
  • Transfer to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming, and refrigerate until cooled.

2- Assemble the Trifle:

  • Dissolve 1.5 tablespoons of instant coffee in warm water.
  • Cut ladyfingers in half, and quickly dip them into the coffee solution. Arrange a layer into your serving dish or individual cups.
  • Fill a piping bag with the chilled pastry cream. Pipe a layer over the ladyfingers.
  • Repeat the layers until your cups are filled.
  • If desired, top with a layer of whipped cream.
  • Sprinkle cocoa powder on top as a final touch.

3- Serving:

  • Chill the assembled trifle for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
