On my fourth and final day in Cuenca, I decided to visit a famous archaeological site about an hour and a half away from the city: Ingapirca. I went on this trip with Karina, a Chilean girl I shared a room with at the hostel. We made arrangements with a travel agency and left early in the morning. >*En mi cuarto y último día en Cuenca, decidí ir a un famoso lugar arqueológico que está como a una hora y media de esta ciudad: Ingapirca. A esta excursión fui con Karina, una chica chilena con la que compartí habitación en el hostel. According to the indigenous guide who accompanied us throughout the tour, Ingapirca is the best-preserved and most important pre-Columbian site in Ecuador. >*La entrada a este complejo arqueológico que está en la provincia del Cañar, costó 6 dólares. Although it was cloudy, windy, and cold, I enjoyed the tour. Among the things the guide told us was that in her language, Kichwa, Ingapirca means “wall of the Inca.” >*El paisaje en este lugar es muy bello, con un pasto verde que contrasta con las ruinas a su alrededor. Aunque el día estaba nublado, había viento y hacía frío, disfruté del recorrido. During the tour, we were able to see the different areas that make up the complex, such as the terraces, collective tombs, ceremonial baths, cellars, lintels, and of course, the most striking feature: the Temple of the Sun. >*Este complejo de cuatro hectáreas, a una altura de 3.160 metros sobre el nivel del mar, era un centro ceremonial de los indios cañari, mucho tiempo antes de la colonización española. First by the Cañari culture and then by the Incas, who took over the site in the 15th century and, because of its strategic location, turned it into a military fortress. >*La guía nos explicó que Ingapirca era además utilizado como un sitio de observación científica y astronómica. The guide told us that most of the site is made of green andesite and volcanic stone. Having been built in an east-west direction, light reaches all areas.
