Recuerdo que llegué en un septiembre sofocante, descubriendo una ciudad que no se da a la primera. Manzanillo te pide tiempo, te exige que camines sus calles al ritmo de su brisa. Mi vida transcurría entre el trajín de las clases y mi refugio sagrado: el Parque Carlos Céspedes.

Los domingos, el estudio se detenía. La banda municipal inundaba el aire con danzones y yo, desde un banco, aprendía más sobre la dignidad y la gracia observando a los viejitos bailar, que en cualquier lección de filosofía.

Pero si algo define mis años allí, es el Malecón. Era mi terapia. Al atardecer, cuando el sol convertía el golfo en un espejo de mercurio derretido, caminaba junto a las “Sirenas”, esculturas que no miran el mar con nostalgia, sino que lo vigilan. Allí aprendí a distinguir el olor del salitre mezclado con el diesel de los barcos pesqueros y el sonido de las gaviotas anunciando el fin del día.

Y, por supuesto, estaban las noches... ¡Cómo olvidar los carnavales! Manzanillo se transformaba en un torbellino de color y alegría. Fue allí, entre el sudor y la euforia de la multitud, donde bailé hasta el cansancio con la Orquesta Original de Manzanillo. Y también con el órgano de manubrio mezclado con el son más auténtico se te metía en las venas; era imposible quedarse quieto. Éramos jóvenes, invencibles, y sentíamos que el mundo entero cabía en esa fiesta a la orilla del mar.

La comida era otro ritual de supervivencia y placer. Con nuestro ajustado presupuesto estudiantil, el banquete de reyes era la liseta frita. Recuerdo aquel puesto cerca del mar donde el pescadito salía dorado, crujiente, para comerlo con casabe. Esa combinación de lo salado del mar con la textura ruda de la yuca nos sabía a gloria. Y cuando el calor apretaba demasiado, corríamos a la Cremería por un helado de mantecado que justificaba cualquier escasez.

Hubo momentos de solemnidad, como cuando visitamos La Demajagua. Pararse frente a la campana de Céspedes no era una excursión más; era sentir el peso de la historia bajo los pies, entender que la libertad tenía una música como de palmas. Como el sonido de las palmas arrulladas por el viento.

It was there, amidst the sweat and euphoria of the crowd, that I danced until I was exhausted with the Orquesta Original de Manzanillo. And the sound of the hand-cranked organ, blending with the most authentic son, seeped into your veins; it was impossible to stay still. We were young, invincible, and we felt like the whole world fit into that party by the sea.

Food was another ritual of survival and pleasure. With our tight student budget, fried mullet was a feast fit for kings. I remember that stall near the sea where the little fish came out golden and crispy, to be eaten with cassava bread. That combination of the sea salt with the rough texture of the cassava tasted heavenly. And when the heat became too oppressive, we'd run to the ice cream parlor for a vanilla ice cream that made up for any shortage.
