There is a coolness in the woods just before the sun emerges to turn the day into another scorcher. To beat the midday heat, I slipped out for an early morning walk through one of my local woods and came across some unexpected fungi that made getting up early well worth it.
This might be a Blusher, a common fungus with its speckled brown cap sitting among the grass.
To my untrained eye, some just look like bog standard fungi. One was a chunky white lump growing straight out of a branch. Without an expert on hand, I had absolutely no idea what they actually were. They easily blend into the background of any woodland walk.
On a rotting log was a very bright yellow patch that looked like the dog had puked up. Funnily enough, despite looking like fungus, it is actually a slime mould, commonly known as Dog Vomit Slime Mould or Scrambled Egg Slime Mould. Lovely!
I think this is also a type of slime mould called Wolf's Milk Slime Mould, with its small, pink, round bodies. I might not know exactly what every fungus is, but discovering everything from familiar fungi to strange slime moulds still made for an interesting walk.
